2. Types of bathroom extractor fan. There are two main types of bathroom extractor fan: Axial and Centrifugal. Axial fans are the ones that you are used to seeing on walls and ceilings and tend to have air extraction rates of between 85m3/hr and 95m3/hr on the 4 inch models. These are suitable for standard installations where the fan is intended to be ducted through the wall. Centrifugal fans tend to be (but not always) inline duct fans. (see previous section). Centrifugal fans are usually much more powerful than axial fans with air extraction rates of between 110m3/hr and 220m3/hr on the 4 inch models. Centrifugal fans are particularly well suited to installations where long duct lengths are required. The Vent Axia Solo Plus, for example, can be used in duct runs up to 50m!

6. Noise. Typical dB measurements for axial bathroom fans range between 35dB(A) and 45dB(A) with the more powerful centrifugal bathroom fans between 40dB(A) and 55dB(A). Whilst centrifugal fans are louder, it should be remembered that they are housed in the loft space and so are insulated and further away, lessesning the volume somewhat. 7. Aesthetics. Remember: you are likely to see this fan every time you use the bathroom. The money you saved on it when purchasing will soon be forgotten, so don't install an ugly fan just because it's cheap. Homeowners are spending more in making their bathrooms beautiful with cool lighting and funky fixtures and fan designs have improved immensely. The old 'box with grilles' is slowly being replaced with unobtrusive and subtle 'tile' type designs which sit comfortably with any bathroom aesthetic.

Make sure it's durable! When you are spending money on a new piece of furniture, you want to make sure that this investment will last, so it is important to invest in durable pieces of furniture that will see you through plenty of years to come. Check that the unit cannot be subject to any water damage or, if it has a mirrored front, that it has a de-mister to avoid any unsightly marks. Keep versatility in mind. While your bathroom may look all fresh and new once you have installed your new bathroom cabinet it is important to remember that due to fleeting interior design trends, you may want to redecorate the bathroom again in the future. With this in mind, make sure that the unit you choose is versatile so it can effortlessly fit in with a redecorated bathroom setting to remove the need of having to purchase a new cabinet in the future.

Preparation. Make sure you have the right cleaning products to get the task done. These do not have to be off the shelf commercially expensive products. There are some organic cleaning compounds that you could use that are less expensive and are kind to the environment. But the products you use for your bathroom are down to personal preference. You have to remember that your bathroom is used by your whole family so be careful before and after the use of any product to ensure that it does not pose a significant risk to you, your children or indeed your pets. You will also need suitable cloths to ensure that you can clean the various surfaces in the bathroom. Ceramics and Glass are the principle areas to clean however you will need to pay attention to grouted areas, tiles, stainless steel and wooden materials. Make sure you have a suitable bin bag to remove any rubbish you encounter (take into account any recycling you can). Finally in terms of preparation you will need to ensure you have plenty of hot water, let's begin grab a coffee.

Dust anybody? Starting from the top of your bathroom, (i.e the ceiling and light fittings) use a duster to remove any cobwebs or dust that may have accumulated over the winter. A dry duster can be used on painted surfaces or you could use a little furniture polish to encourage the removal of dust. If you have a vacuum cleaner with a long attachment then this can help with venetian blinds or the top of picture rails etc. You will need to use your duster to manually remove the dust from the top of the door frame and the top of any picture frames you have. Consider the top of any bathroom cabinets or mirrors, you will need to take any items that are stored here and dust accordingly. When these items are removed, consider their use. If you don't use them or they are not visually attractive then remove them. If you find areas of dust that are stubborn then you will need to wash this down with hot water and a mild detergent. Lemon juice is a great alternative to detergent and leaves the bathroom with a fantastic fragrance. Take time to stand back and look for areas you have missed. Once you have reached the floor areas you have dusted your bathroom.

Option 3. Be American - Make your bathroom bigger. If you're feeling patriotic, and have the space to spare, you can extend the area of your toilet and bath. It's as American as apple pie. If you only have a shower stall, you can tear down a non-load-bearing wall and give yourself a proper bathtub. If you already have a bathtub, punch out some closet space from the next room, and give yourself a whirlpool tub. Whatever size bathroom you've got, there are always options for going bigger. (A sauna maybe...?) Option 4. A complete bathroom overhaul. If nothing else is going to do it for you, there's always the final option of a complete overhaul of your existing bathroom. Tear everything out, right down to the bear studs, and completely redo the space. Of the bathroom remodeling projects we've discussed, this is potentially the most tedious, the most expensive and the most disruptive to you and your family. However, if done properly, you can create a perfect place for you to escape your everyday, and add thousands of dollars to the value of your home.

As with the country and traditional bathrooms, cast iron baths are a must. Either a roll-top or slipper bath will do, and although you don't want holes or rust, the more dilapidated it looks the better. Even consider running sandpaper over the paint work and claw feet. It's always worth looking out for old fittings at antique shops and car boot sales. Counter top basins are highly recommended in this setting, and the look out for extremely unusual decorated designs. Place it on a washstand or run-down vanity unit. Add unique ornaments and antique framed mirrors.

What size of cabinet are you looking for? The size of the cabinet is a major consideration. Not only do you want your cabinet to be large enough to store away those daily essentials, you also don't want the cabinet to be too bulky as this could restrict any space in the bathroom. Make sure you measure your bathroom's available space and consider the projection of the cabinet you wish to purchase prior to buying. Is it easy to access? When you have chosen your bathroom cabinet it is important to install it in an area that is easy to access. As many cabinets are fixed above a basin, make sure you have fully taken into account whether it can be easily opened without the door hitting any nearby vanities and also that it is within each reach. Having the cabinet too high or too low could cause strain on your back.
